I have been so out of the loop on my blog. Exciting things are happening! I got engaged on June 3rd. The 5th anniversary of the day we met. We are getting married this summer...August 14th! Loving wedding planning, my parents are so excited, I can't wait!

Valentine's dinner at home

Today I am grateful for:

I am having a very nice weekend. Saturday went food shopping with my mother and sister and then finally had a friend over to scrap. I'll show some of the layouts later in this post. Then Sunday I prepared a Valentine's Dinner for Cary. He had to work until later in the evening so it was a late dinner. An appetizer of scallops and ceasar salad. Then steak tips with peppers, onions and mushrooms, scalloped potatos, green beans. And three beautiful desserts from a local specialty grocery store....

We ate by candlight which we never do and I loved it! I got the two candlesticks at Michael's for $5 each marked down from $12 each! What a deal. It really made a difference for our dinner. We sat and talked for awhile about all sorts of things. It was a really nice night. I am lucky.

Here's some recent layouts...some I did this weekend with my friend and others I recently finished. Most of the supplies came from Cocoa Daisy kits with a few other supplies I had on hand thrown in. I'm typically not good of keeping track when I'm scrapping so I'll just post them without supply lists this time!

"Christmas Nest" - a page documenting some of the directions around the apartment. The tree picture is mounted on an envelope that contains more images. There is something about this layout that bothers me. It took awhile to arrange the photos and never really felt like it came together. But I'm letting it go!

"A Night Out" - about an after Christmas get-together with old friends. Pretty simple layout using all elements from the January Cocoa Daisy kit.

"Christmas Eve Morning" - Played around with the scalloped paper and some non-straight lines. I feel like I get in a rut with my over-organized linear style. I wanted to try something different.

"Christmas Eve" - need to still do the journaling on this page but I like how it turned out. Used a piece of paintable patterned paper I have been holding on to forever. Used some iridescent metallic watercolors to just highligt some of the scroll and leaf shapes. Little hard to see in this picture.

So now I just want to finish my Christams Day layout and add in the journaling and I can close the book on 2009....literally! I did start a smaller scrapbook with just some favorite photos over time. No particular order or year. Just a place to tell stories and scap photos  feel like scrapping. And this year so far I haven't been as good at taking photos and developing them so I want to get on that. But I've never really been one to worry about being "caught up." I used to be and I let that go...too much pressure.

Well....
Today having a lazy morning so far. We'll see what the day brings!

vacation project and other stuff

Our tree. There is a story as to why we have a pumpkin under the tree. It is just the longest-lasting-Halloween-pumpkin-ever! We bought that in early October and it is still solid! So we feel badly throwing it away. I don't know how to make pumpkin pie that doesn't come out of a can...

This Christmas was another different one but so nice. Last year was the first year I wasn't living in my parent's garage apartment so I didn't get up at the crack of dawn and open gifts with everyone. Cary and I went over later in the morning. It was nice...but different. This year he had to leave for work at 6:30am unfortunately. So another different Christmas. He and I celebrated and opened gifts on Christmas Eve day. On Christmas morning I went over to my families house after he left for work. So it was almost like it was as a kid. It was nice to feel like Christmas stretched out over a few days instead.

I'm on vacation this week and loving it! 9 more days...
Yesterday I went to my LSS and picked up a few things for a project with some Christmas gift money...and received a $20 coupon in return! Good deal...I'll be back there this week :)

Anyhow I was eyeing this...

and saw a store sample where it was turned into a calendar. Perfect! I just took down the one I made at a class there last year. So I bought some basic neutral supplies....

And I plan on doing each months's square differently while all using the basic neutral base. Adding colorful, meaningful details. Probably using some of the papers and embellishments I have been getting in my Cocoa Daisy kits. I am looking forward to working on this during the week. And it is the sort of project that while it is hanging up in my kitchen I can add to it during the year if I find something that fits it.

Today I am looking forward to spending some much needed time with Cary. He has been working 12+ hour shifts for the past few days. We plan on going to the movies and maybe dinner. And the mall to pick out a new Wii game or two. Last night I met some old high school friends and a local bar and had so much fun chatting. Two of the girls live out-of-state and I hadn't seen them in years.

great days

summer girl's night at my place

Yesterday was a great day! Started off with a few hours at the beach. Only bummer was that there have been so few beach days I'm still getting roasted on any little spot I miss with sunblock! That's fair Irishness for you.

In the afternoon I got a surprise phone call from Cary. He's doing good and it was so nice to have a longer phone call from him. Then last night I hosted Girl's Night last night. A monthly get-together with my high school girlfriends. It was so fun! I love doing stuff like that and hadn't been able to since my last hosting because of the apartment issues we had. I love cooking and home stuff and having people over and never do. BBQ pulled pork sandwhiches, baked "fried" chicken, potato salad, Greek pasta salad and homemade blueberry pie. It was great!

This morning I sat by the pool for awhile and talked to a few friends and Cary's dad. I never talk on the phone that much but it was nice to feel connected. Tonight I plan on going to my knitting circle and getting some help with my shawl that has a mistake in it. Then my brother is coming over for dinner and DVD watching.

Tomorrow is my last official day of vacation and it has been a nice relaxed one. I hope that I can hold onto some of this positive energy as I start off my work week. So often I get caught up in the stressfull nature of my work and I don't like what it has done to me. I want to hold on to what is important and get rid of the rest of the "baggage."

My 1st sweater: Pleat-Neck Top pattern in the Spring/Summer 2009 Knit Simple

Here's what was good about today:

1. Cary called me from OCS! It has been 14 days since we got to talk last. He also had a chance to email. The Army is keeping him very busy but he is healthy and good and has completed Phase 1 of OCS.


2. Got to wear my 1st sweater today to the birthday party for my LYS! I love it and am so excited it fits.


3. Spent the morning at the beach. Alone. Mom was going to come with me but she decided not to at the last minute. It was nice to be able to still go.


4. Bought some yarn for a few new projects at the LYS's sale...a shawl, a lace scarf for my mom for Christmas and a helmet liner for charity.


5. The sun was out (most of the time)!


6. I can sleep in tomorrow...

father's day

I think I have posted this picture before. It is an old picture I scanned in of my Dad holding me when I was a baby. I love it. My mother tells me that every day when he came home from work he would immediately want to hold me and play with me as I got older. I just got to spend a nice Father's Day with my Dad and family. He really is one of my favorite people in this world. I'm so lucky he is my Dad. I gave him some drawing supplies. He is an amazing artist and hasn't done any pen & ink drawings since before I was born or I was little. He's a very creative person but hasn't been able to find the time to do that hobby. I'm hoping he'll take some time out to draw. He is the hardest working person I know.

I got to do some knitting while watching tv with my mom. I am so close to finishing my first sweater but I made a big mistake (dropped stitches, etc) and we couldn't fix it. I thought I'd bring it to the LYS tuesday and get some help. But I played around with it when I got home and I think I have it fixed. But before I knit further I want to make sure. So...the finishing of the sweater will have to wait. Boo!

But now I can start my sister's Christmas present...

So I might start that tonight. While I watch some more seasons of Weeds. I'm loving that show and it's a distraction. There are parts about being alone I'm liking but for the most part I'm lonely. 47 more days til he's home. I haven't been able to talk to him in 9 days. Too long.

Enough feeling sorry for myself....I'm a lucky person today.

Being at work today was a good focus. Distraction. Missing Cary like crazy but it is getting a little easier.

Also went to my gym class tonight after work. I am enjoying getting back into my muscle conditioning glass routine. I used to go 3x week. In the last few months I started back on Wednesdays. This week I'm aiming for two classes. They really do make me feel good when I am done. Like I've accomplished something! Plus....I got my city resident beach sticker yesterday...so I'm ready for my first beach day...now for the sun to correspond with a day off! So I need to get my *$$ in gear and get moving at the gym!

homesick at home

I've been trying to keep busy since he left. It is such a wierd feeling...feeling homesick in your own home. That is the only way I can describe it. I have new found appreciation for women who send their men off to war for years at a time. Especially those who have children. I cannot imagine being in that position. I only have to wait 54 days to see him and we don't have kids yet. And I know he's safe and not in a war. I am lucky. We are lucky. He will be back soon. But it is still hard. It is preparing me for how it might feel if/when he is deployed.

Friday after I left the hotel and he went off to the airport I did some retail therapy at outlets in Maine. Hit LL. Bean and others. Stayed within my budget and got some really pretty things including a few skirts and summer dresses. I rarely wear skirts but do like how easy they are in the summer. Plus Cary loves when I look girly so I figured he'd appreciate them too. I love one skirt in particular from LL Bean...

...so pretty and flowy. Have a basic white t shirt to go with it. Also got a flowery blue skirt and will wear that with just a white t as well. I should own stock in white-t's. I wear them with everything all year round! I know ...boring but they are so easy!

Friday night I went to the paint-your-own-pottery Girl's Night after dinner at a friends. It was fun but I was so overtired from getting up at 3:30 am and getting very little sleep. Saturday I slept in and cooked dinner for my parents and brother and sister last night. It was so nice having them over. We haven't been able to host anyone since January when we had all the issues with the apartment begin. So it was nice to have them over. I'd like to do that again when he gets home.

Today it is rainy and gloomy out. I plan on doing chores: bills, laundry, etc and then going to my knitting circle tonight. I also rented more of Season 1 of Weeds and the movie He's Just Not that Into You. Looking forward to watching that tonight!

Just a quick post. It's been a busy week. Today I'm off from work to help Cary pack up his Army gear. We are staying in Maine overnight and he's off to OCS early in the a.m. For...2 months. I'm sad already.

Trying to make plans to keep myself busy...shopping at outlets after I bring him to the airport, a Girl's Night with friends at the paint-your-own-pottery place, Cooking dinner for my family on Saturday..knitting circle on Sunday. I miss him already.

Also...today is my mom's birthday...it's a "0" birthday though she'd kill me if I said which one! She keeps saying she is "not acknowledging her birthday this year."

Well...off to Maine....

June 1st on the Boulevard

Today's been busy with errands and sending Cary off for his last guard weekend before he goes down south for OCS next week. He'll be gone for 2 months and that is starting to hit me. I guess it is good practice for any future deployments we might face. Today I got a few treats/neccesseties for the apartment. Nothing really exciting...a shower curtain, some new throw pillows for the couch, some fun patriotic summer dishtowels. Stuff like that. I love nesting!

Last night he and I celebrated our 3 year anniversary of when we first met this week. Just a quiet dinner at the place we had our first date. Delicious baked local seafood and a quiet night at home.

As for other stuff...

I finished this layout on Monday (scraplifted the layout from one Wendy Smedley did in an old magazine)....hoping to do a few more layouts this weekend. Trying to get some girlfriends together at my place tomorrow to scrap. We haven't done that since this winter and it was so fun!

A beautiful, windy and sunny day. Took some time to sit outside on my balcony and read. Waiting to see some hummingbirds at my feeder. But none yet. Also took some time to work on an Easter layout. Tried to just go with it and not think it out too much. I tend to do that sometimes and have trouble trying new things. So I just went with it. Not the best picture...but here it is...used ribbons, patterned paper, a ghost butterfly accented with pearlescent acrylic and some buttons.

Here's the baby card I made yesterday. They loved the sweater I knitted....I was so proud of it!

Having a relaxed, lazy day at home with Cary before he goes off to S. Maine overnight in prep for his early a.m. physical for the Army. One of his last preparations before he leaves for the summer in a few weeks. He even made me blueberry panckakes today...which is his specialty!

Now we are off in a few to take a walk and get some dinner before he leaves...

Wingaersheek Beach, Gloucester, MA - April 2009

This has been an up & down week. I have been so busy with pre-graduation/end-of-the-semester stuff. Haven't been home many nights this week. Cary got bad news this week that we are trying to figure out. He is being laid-off as of next week. Fortunately he has some good pay coming this summer while he is at OCS for National Guard but that also makes it hard to be looking for a job. I hope something works out for him. He works so hard.

As for other news...I spend the day with friends for a yard sale to benefit the Relay-for-Life here in town. It was a good day outside. Got some knitting done on a baby sweater for a co-worker. After I had lunch after with friends...a good ole' Gloucester Haddock sandwich...hmmm. After I went shopping because I needed to find something inexpensive to wear to the college graduation and my sister's upcoming graduation. Found a few things and splurged on two pairs of shoes. I feel guilty about those. But they are very cute and really weren't that expensive. Picked up a few groceries at Trader Joe's and now I'm relaxing and taking a break.

Exhausted.

An empty beach

Today was such a busy, rushed day. I rushed through a busy day at work. Rushed to get home and cook a quick supper before Cary went off to work. Rushed.

I needed to stop. Breathe. I told myself I would do that today.

So after he left I took a walk down the boulevard. It was so cold with the wind off the water. Refreshing though. I sat on a quiet rock for few minutes. Then exercised with the rest of my walk. Saw people walking their dogs. A Husky playing catch along the water edge. Saw boats coming in. The tide washing in on the rocks. People walking after thier days. Cars going by. The sun getting lower. The wind getting colder.

It helped me to slow down even by walking quickly in the wind.

Noticing things around me. Feeling present. Prioritizing what is important. Wishing I hadn't rushed through cooking supper and didn't really just enjoy the little time I had to spend with Cary. Wishing I had not been so frantic to get "things done."

I will do better tomorrow...

Easter

Sending everyone wishes for a Happy Easter. Spent some nice time with Cary and my family today. After Cary went off to work and my Dad was driving my brother back to college - I spent time with my mom and sister and watched Slumdog Millionare. Makes you feel grateful for what you have watching that movie.

Thinking of what is important.

I'm feeling nostalgic today.

Memories of childhood, Easter dresses, playing outside, first warm days of Spring. I think I have been feeling so crummy about situations lately and trying desparately to feel grateful...then guilty when the junk consumes me.

But today I feel grateful.

Grateful for the nice childhood I had and the place I can still go back to. Home. Here's my random memories of this time of year as a kid...

• Easter dresses and white patent leather shoes...that most importantly had to make noise when I walked...a nice grown-up clicking sound on the wood floor.
• Making mudpies for dad in my playhouse...pine-needles, water from the brook and sawdust from Dad's work made the best recipes.
• Walks to the mill.
• Marathon Monday at Aunt Esta's House on Windemere Road. Every year. Every year of Mom's childhood too. Patriot's Day just isnt' the same without that long ride to Newton to watch the runners and see the Aunts.
• Raking leaves.
• One day I remember it wasn't warm enough yet. Mom and Dad were raking leaves outside and I found the shopping bag with some new Spring/Summer clothes for me and I put them on and went outside. I wasn't supposed too...and it really wasn't warm enough. But they were so pretty and new! I'm still like that...
• Bike rides with Rachel (my cousin and childhood best friend), playing in the brook, running around the house, picking daisies.
• Lilacs.
• Taking a long bike ride with Rachel from Grammy's to the local farmstand to buy a plant...rode all the way back and planted our single Impatient in the shade garden near Grammy's window. Our attempt at competing with Grandfather's amazing garden!

Wow. Time flies. What are your favorite childhood memories of this time of year?

simplicity

Got myself this necklace at a store near my work this week. A treat. "Simplify" was my "one little word" for 2009. Plus the idea of the dandelion fluff...making wishes...letting them go...important messages for me/us to hold on to.

Looking forward to some fun and relaxation today. This has been a very up-down, stressful work week. Fortunately I have today, "Good Friday" off. And we are celebrating Cary's birthday since he had to work on his real birthday and birthday weekend last week. Probably going to lunch and a movie.

Also hoping we can stop at Trader Joe's. I really want an Easter Lily and some tulips. Really want to brighten up the apartment. I am cautiously optimistic that we are nearing the end of our apartment nightmare. Still living with the bags but I will decorate around them!

I've also gotten a lot done on my first knitted sweater! It is going faster than I thought it would. Having such fun with it. Spent some time at my LYS Tuesday for a "free knit night" and actually got a lot done on it. I am loving going to those knit nights. Fun, laughing, learning from some talented knitters. It is an hour and a half of escape for me. I love it.

Well...later I'll try and post a picture of the gigantic Easter basket Cary put together for my family. So thoughtful! It was all his idea and he bought the stuff and put it together while I was at work yesterday. Loads of coffee, candy, teas, crackers, ...stuff for each person in my family. He was like a little kid all proud of his work!

my weekend

I did this for 52Q on Wednesday. The day Cary and I met with our landlord. It was such a stressful day and it was helpful to focus on this for a few minutes during lunch. It is something that I'm trying to focus on today. I cleaned the apartment -around all the bags- and tried to organize as best as I can. I took lots of pictures of my current knitting projects and recent 52Q ATC's. Missing my scrapbooking so much. I got my new issue of CK in the mail and I haven't been reading the last few issues because it makes me sad that I can't really get at my supplies.

Yesterday was so packed full of stuff. I didn't really have time to do anything for me except spend an hour in Barnes & Noble...got a few books, etc. I had to make two presentations at the college yesterday for Revisit Day and grocery shopping, laundry, etc. I was going from 6am - 10pm. So much for a day off! Oh well. I got a lot done that had to be done.

But...I will be positive today. And more relaxed. Just taking my time after cleaning this am. I have my knitting circle at my LYS later today and hopefully a visit with my family.

So...let me share a bit of two projects I'm working on.

Here's the beginnings of my sweater...


As you can see...it is really just the beginnings! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this yarn and the color. It is so soft and easy to work with.

Here's the dishcloth I started last week with the same yarn in a different color...

This is the most complicated lace I have tried to do so far. Having some trouble with it so it's slow going. The green you can see is a "lifeline"...a contrasting peice of yarn holding the stitches in a row so if I screw up I can rip it out to that point. What a wonderful inventions! I have used my lifelines many times so far!

Well...I'm off to read a few blogs, shower and go out into the nice Spring day I hear we are having. And so looking forward to Cary coming home from Guard tonight! I haven't really talked to him since Friday since he's staying in a barrack this time and the man refuses to own a cell phone. I miss him...

birthdays, crazyness and knitting

Today is my guy's birthday! It has been a rushed one. He opened his gift for me at 3am this morning when he got home from work...tonight we made a rushed dinner between 4:30 and 5:30 when he left for work again. Salmon and steak. Hmm...This weekend he's off to Maine for guard...he's preparing for OCS (Officer Candidate School) in Alabama this summer. So we will extend his birthday to next weekend :) Sometimes I think about how lucky I am to have found him and vice versa. We lived 400 miles apart and we really shouldn't have met. Fate is real. He makes me laugh and smile and look at the lighter things in life. I am lucky. Happy Birthday to him!

Today has been unbelievable crazy busy at work. Then tomorrow at my other job I have so many meetings and then the class I teach. Saturday will be another full work day. I am looking forward to Sunday! But I can't complain. Cary is working through his birthday and straight through to next weekend.

On to some fun news. My mom was able to get some tickets to the U2 concert in September. I tried this past monday but they were sold out so quickly. So they added a show and she got them! Cary won't join us for this one...he's not a big fan. But today I saw that Sara Evans is having a concert in August and we are going to try for tickets this Monday. He's never been to a concert and we rarely spend money of that sort of stuff. I'm excited. Except Cary keeps teasing....he has a little crush on Sara....and says I might want to reconsider bringing him to her concert!

I'm breathing a sigh of relief after using my assertiveness this past week regarding the apartment. Still ongoing but it feels good to stand up for ourselves.

Meanwhile...I cast on my first sweater last night! No pictures of it...it is from the Spring/Summer 09 Knit Simple...in a very soft pretty aqua (#18 below)...

I can't wait to get into this project! This yarn is so soft and nice to work with. And I treated myself to my first nice pair of needles. Hopefully I can take some pictures of my progress this weekend. I also finished a few more of my ATC's for Emily Falconbridge's 52Q ....

Well I'm off to have a peice of birthday cake and do some knitting!

So today was Phase I of "The Confrontation." A meeting with a senior manager of the apartment complex since we were getting nowhere with our direct complex manager. We got some answers...some things still are unanswered. We were informed of some adjustments to our upcoming lease renewal to allow us the option to break our lease when this problem is over if we decide to...since we can't move til it is over...and they are going to increase thier level of communication, etc....

Oh....and they won't be raising our rent.

Now to see what Phase II brings....

So glad to have that meeting over with though. When I am anxious, nervous or angry I feel it in my gut. I get so nauseous. Yuck. So after the meeting I went on the treadmill for a bit, made myself dinner and am now waiting for clothes in the dryer. Thanks so much to everyone who has left little kind thoughts. I know I'm vague on here about the problem we have been having and it is hard to really explain but I truly appreciate the kind words of encouragement. They mean a lot.

I hope this is all over soon. We are going on month 4 soon. 6 if you count the few months before we had an issue. I just want to live like a normal person again!

Cary would love that his old friend "Ginger" is featured on my blog today! This is an old photo he has of his childhood dog. She was literally like his mom. His pal. For Christmas a few years ago I had scanned in his old picture and cropped and fixed it up a little. I had it printed out and framed for him. So now (when our apartment is normal) Ginger and my old dog Maddy sit on our entertainment center. Our little shrine to our furry friends who our playing up in dog heaven together!

Fun weekend so far!

Much needed...

• Ate lots of crap (McD's and Wendy's in one day and a Grande Java Chip Iced Frappuccino..mmmm)
• Shopped with my sister, bought over-priced makeup at Sephora, and an outfit, etc. Spent too much money but had so much fun.
• Knitted (photo is of a lace dishcloth I started & finished this weekend!)
• Saw "Love you Man" with Cary. Very funny!
• and now I'm getting some chores done...laundry, etc.
• Now I'm cooking some ribs and potato salad for sunday dinner before Cary goes off to work..and I'll be off for a visit to my parent's and a knitting group at the yarn store. I'm off!

update

I have been a bad updater. So many things going on this week. My mind is in a million places. Good and frustrating. But whose isn't?

Anyway...here are the 2nd pair of Fetching Gloves as promised.

They didn't come out as I wanted. On my 1st pair, I adapted the pattern a little and added a cable (extra rows) at the wrist and knuckle. Well...I intended to do the same with this pair. So when I finished the first glove I couldn't figure out why it was so small. Actually it was about the size it would have been had I followed the pattern exactly...except with all cables. Then...

I realized I left out a whole line of the pattern. 18 rows to be exact! I had put my knitting down one night and when I picked it up the next day I missed that row!

Ooops!


So I made the second glove to match. Now on to my 3rd pair with this same yarn in the length I wanted! I do love the yarn's changing colors...

I also finished this cute little Premie hat this week for a charity my LYS is supporting...



I photographed it next to an apple for size comparison. It is so little! Amazing.

I also finished a few more of the 52Q ATC's I had been working on...this batch has just straight journaling on the back so I just photographed the fronts of the cards...

Week #9:What was the last brave thing I did? (letter stamps, watercolor pencils, Somerset Studio buttefly clipart)
